THE HAGUE, Netherlands—A famous Dutch comedian who attended the Chinese Spectacular at the World Forum Theatre in The Hague Tuesday evening thought the show was nothing short of "a miracle."
"It is wonderful. Visually, it's a miracle. From the time the curtain first raises the whole audience is taken aback," said Erik Van Muiswinkel.
Known for his hilarious imitations of famous people, Muiswinkel works in theatre and has been touring Holland with his show for the past 15 years.
Muiswinkel said he was highly impressed by Xiaochun Qi's erhu solo. The erhu is a Chinese instrument known for its wide range of notes and haunting sound.
"The most impressive thing for me was the lady with the special Chinese cello, the erhu. That was enchanting. The whole audience was spellbound. For me that was the high point."
He also enjoyed the grand-scale dances, "I especially liked the way the dancers move without moving, they just slide around with very small steps and that's beautiful."
"And I liked the ethnic dances — the Tibetan and the Mongolian dances. I really liked that. And the final number with the drums was beautiful."
Muiswinkel commented on the scenes in the show that depict a contemporary tragedy in China: the persecution of Falun Gong. Falun Gong is a meditation practice and spiritual discipline currently being brutally suppressed by the Chinese communist regime.
"Those scenes really struck me and were very interesting to me. It really hits you," he said.
The Spectacular draws from China's 5,000-year history, portraying myths and legends from ancient times to the present day. Muiswinkel said Chinese people can have an "incredible power."
"I know a little about Chinese culture. But I have never experienced it from this near by." He was so engrossed in the show that he wasn't aware of the passage of time.
"There was so much to see… The show was more than two hours, and it was over before I knew it. It was beautiful."
