DUISBURG—Shen Yun, the Divine Performing Arts Chinese Show started a European Tour on February 13th in Duisburg, Germany. Many spectators were introduced to different layers of 5,000 years of Chinese culture. “The methods they used to explain these issues deeply touched me”, said one visitor, Kerstin Mürer. “It would be great if the show could come to China but I don’t think this will happen anytime soon. They’d have to leave Lhasa first,” she joked as she alluded to the oppression of the indigenous population of Tibet at the hands of the Chinese regime.
“The symbolic images about Tibet were clearly expressed. It wasn’t overdone at all – it came right to the point” Mürer rhapsodized. In addition to the pieces with historic themes, there were also pieces dealing with the current persecution of Falun Gong, which brought the audience back to modern times. Kerstin Mürer thought this was a good mixture. “The Buddhist way of life has arrived in modern times. I didn’t find it bothersome at all. On the contrary, I thought it was a great mixture, and it was appropriate to apply it to modern times.”
Two retired ladies, Edith Berger and Elke Williams thought the show was beautiful. They liked the dances, the music, the interpretation of the dances and all of the choreography. “I was pleasantly surprised”, said Berger. She most liked the second piece in which the dancers come out of the sea.
Williams said, “I liked the last piece before the intermission with the drums”. She also enjoyed the way the various regions in China were addressed. She especially mentioned “Tibet – although in my mind, Tibet is not China.” Also, Mongolia and the various dynasties.
“All of the symbolic imagery, like the part about Tibet, was clearly expressed. It wasn’t overdone at all – it came right to the point”
