THE HAGUE, Netherlands—Mr. Zheng Zuomin, vice president of the Holland Association of Overseas Chinese from Wenzhou City, used to be a violinist with a ballet troupe in mainland China.

After watching the Shen Yun Chinese Spectacular show by Divine Performing Arts on Tuesday at the Hague World Forum Theatre, he said that every one of the performances was excellent.

"Let's say, the music—usually Chinese music lacks force, and Western music is not exquisite enough. But the live music played by the Divine Performing Arts orchestra is both grand in force and exquisite in its delicacy," Mr. Zheng said.

He was also impressed by the color.

"In Westerners' eyes, Chinese costumes are either too bright or missing something. This performance, however, used every color you can name, and yet you wouldn't feel it's too messy. This is the ideal artistic effect that Divine Performing Arts has achieved."

Ms. Sioe Lan Teng, an overseas Chinese from Indonesia, is a professional dancer, and she too marveled at the show's dance and music.

She said excitedly, "Spectacular! Spectacular! It was really a spectacular performance. How I wish I were one of the performers among them!"

Ms. Teng was most impressed by Erhu soloist Qi Xiaochun.

"The moment she started to play, tears kept rolling down my face. Napkins were not enough. I needed a big towel," she said.

Ms. Teng, who has never been to China, commented on the essence of Chinese culture from a cultural as well as an artistic perspective.

"The three words—Truthfulness, Compassion, and Forbearance—are the very essence of the Chinese culture," she said.
