Nicola Wood is one of the team of 19 talented and creative sculptors from Australia and around the world who have worked for almost three weeks to bring this "Fairytales & Fables" sand sculpture to life in Frankston, Victoria. Three thousand five hundred tonnes of sand have been meticulously carved into scenes and characters from a variety of stories, such as Hansel and Gretel , Tom Thumb , The Emperor's New Clothes , Puss in Boots , The Tortoise and the Hare .

Previously a teacher and artist working 2-dimensionally, Ms Wood began her sand sculpting career only a year ago. "I came to Australia a while ago just to do some travelling and I stumbled across a sand sculpturing team exhibition. I volunteered for a couple of days and then they offered me a job."

Since then, Ms Wood has travelled the globe sand sculpturing in various countries, recently winning gold in the world championships in Canada.

Originally from England, Ms Wood says that sand sculpturing is also popular in England and Europe. "In the winter we do ice and snow, and in the summer we do sand, and if we are lucky enough to come over to Australia, we also do sand in the Australian summer."

The Fairy Tales & Fables Sand Sculpting Exhibition is open daily until April 6, 2008.
