FRANKFURT—Brigitte L. Werkmann and her husband Johannes attended the Divine Performing Arts Chinese Spectacular at the Jahrhunderthalle Theatre in Frankfurt Saturday night.
Johannes, an antique auctioneer, violinist and social scientist, said he was "very interested to find some new aspects of China, which are really old aspects."
"There's been very hard interruptions of the cultural development in China in the last century. So that was a big loss of wisdom and ancient spirituality," he said.
"I think today it's necessary that people, human beings, by themselves, by their own activity, can find out again this lost and very important [traditional] wisdom. The powerful culture of China, that comes back into our minds," he continued.
Brigitte, also in the antique business, thought the show was "fantastic".
"I'm really surprised; I didn't anticipate something so much spiritual and political really; I'm surprised; …and the performance was perfect, it was just fantastic," she said.
Johannes said the spiritual dimension of the show stood out, especially the acts depicting the persecution of Falun Gong.
"I think there are many human aspects in this performance, and I'm really happy to see that there are other voices of China than the voices we normally hear. And I think it's very good when people come close together and encourage each other, because a single man is very weak in front of the machinery of policy which we have had in the last century, and also today in all of the world."
Brigitte echoed Johannes' praise, "Those performances about the Falun Gong I would say - very impressive."
The music was also a highlight for both Brigitte and Johannes, who said it was "very sensitive".
And of the erhu, a two-stringed Chinese violin: "I myself play the violin so I'm very enthusiastic about the music. I like music, and also this new instrument, with two strings," Johannes said.
Brigitte said, "We just couldn't expect that you can get such a great tone and so many harmonies out of that small instrument."
Of the show's essence, she said, "Now I certainly understand it much better, Divine Performing Arts, what it would like to say, and what it hopefully has given to people."
Johannes, who is working on a 'new social sciences' project, said he hopes people will "awake and create a better world."
Brigitte and Johannes were very pleased that the show would soon be going to Berlin. They would encourage their Chinese friend in Berlin to go see the show, they both agreed .
