DIUSBURG—As the Divine Performing Arts Chinese Spectacular played its final show in Duisburg, Germany, impressed audience members talked about their impressions of the show.

“I am of Chinese ancestry, but did not have much to do with the culture,” said 15-year old Huqian Yang, who grew up in Germany and was not really exposed to the old Chinese traditions. “It was quite interesting to learn about this.”

Currently on a world tour, the Spectacular made its European debut on February 13 and 14 in Duisburg. “Very interesting to hear instruments that one generally does not get to listen to,” said Manuela Wittfoht, referring to the Spectacular’s orchestra, which included traditional Chinese instruments in a classical Western orchestra.

She said the performances she liked the most were the drumming numbers and the fan dance.

“The implication of the dance is easy to recognize and the spirit and soul is part of it,” said Wittfoht, a medical assistant. She added that one feels the connection between people that is built on traditions that are highly valued, and that the old values were not cast aside.

Kevin Huynh from Dortmund spoke of the philosophical aspect of the Spectacular, saying, “in any case, much good comes from the performances. The colors are formidable, the music is so different…I’m speechless.”

Ms. Busse was very impressed by the dance numbers, such as Nymphs of the Sea and the Mongolian Bowl Dance, in which a bowl is balanced on the dancers’ heads. She said that although she’s interested in Chinese culture and reads books about China, the dance performances were new to her.
