TOKYO—Toyo Suzuki, a Taiwanese student studying in Japan, came to the Divine Performing Arts Chinese Spectacular with his girlfriend Ilona from Lithuania.

Toyo liked the power expressed in the performances.

"The song by [soprano, Pi-ju Huang.] She's a woman but her voice … her singing was powerful. And the song was beautiful."

The drumming in the "Drummers of the Tang Court" also impressed Toyo. "The sounds were powerful," he said.

Ilona enjoyed the synchronized choreography.

"I think it's really difficult to dance at the same time in the same way with that many people," she said.

One of her favorite pieces was the "Risen Lotus Flower," depicting three female Falun Gong practitioners.

"Most of all, I liked the performance of the three girls, about their belief, which they were imprisoned for… I was moved most of all by that," she said.

Toyo heard about the show from his mother in Taiwan.

"My mom is in Taiwan, she will go see the show as well. Because I live in Tokyo now she recommended that I come and see it [here]," he said.

The Spectacular will be making a stop Taiwan at the end of February.

Ambassadors from Bangladesh, Ecuador, Afghanistan, Colombia, and Kenya also brought their friends and family to experience the first Spectacular in Asia.
