Glowing almost as bright as the performers themselves, David Madsen had more than one reason to beam after watching Chinese New Year Splendor at Radio City Music Hall on Saturday afternoon.
Not only did Splendor's classical Chinese dance and music styles "thrill" him, but his own son, Jared, threaded stories and history into the performances as the Master of Ceremonies. "I'm just thrilled. I think it's just wonderful. I thoroughly enjoyed it. The dancing is just wonderful. I think it brings through the culture so magnificently. I think it's a wonderful show," said Madsen.
"As far as the message of the show, of course different people have all different kinds of reactions. I think it's non-political. It has touched the heart of almost anybody who has watched it."
Madsen said he found the acts in Splendor that depict the persecution of Falun Gong practitioners in China "most touching."
However, he enjoyed the music and dancing as well.
"I really enjoyed the drummers ... all the dancers, the women are beautiful, and the guys are so athletic—wonderful dancing. They must have worked on this for a long time."
"This is the first time I've watched a Chinese cultural show. I love all of the music, from the tenor at the beginning of the show all the way through. Truth, forbearance, those are the qualities we can all strive for. There is certainly nothing ethnically indigenous about those qualities."
