TOKYO—The opening of the Divine Performing Arts Chinese Spectacular in Tokyo Tuesday evening wowed the audience with its authentic portrayal of traditions and values drawn from China's 5,000-year culture.
Having seen the Spectacular for the first time, three U.S. students at the Japanese Language School in Tokyo said they were delighted with the show.
"I liked the 'Drummers of the Tang Court' performance very much, it was very powerful" said Kaylen, Alissa, and Lena together, as they nodded, agreeing each other.
"Besides the Drum performance, I liked the 'Nymphs of the Sea' dancing so much. It was truly a simulation of water that they could transform it into the costumes … it was just so fantastic," said Kaylen.
The friends agreed that that they found some of the stories presented in Spectacular to be enlightening.
"The spirituality touched me, its spiritual side is very strong and I've learned more about morality and the values of life from the show," said Kaylen. "This show is much more than I expected."
Alissa agreed with her friend as she described the performance "The Risen Lotus Flower."
"Particularly, it talks about people being persecuted for their religious beliefs. I've heard about the situation in China concerning the Falun Gong before but I did not realize that depth of this issue until I watched this performance," said Kaylen.
Kaylen was referring to a scene in the show which tells the story of a contemporary tragedy in China: the persecution of Falun Gong, a meditation practice and spiritual discipline currently being brutally suppressed by the Chinese regime.
"Basically the bad or good people are not necessarily rewarded on earth, but instead it will be in the afterlife. It really inspires me to look into what we're seeking in this lifetime—which may not be the best thing."
All three of them agreed that they never seen a show like Spectacular before.
"The story-telling techniques are very high, it's very different from any other show that I've ever seen before. I learned a lot about traditional Chinese culture," said Kaylen.
