NEW YORK—"It's beautiful, it's graceful, the colors are magnificent; they flow. Even though you don't understand what they're saying, you get a sense of what they're saying, and the beautiful story that's being told."
This is how Chris Frye described the final production of the Chinese New Year Splendor which played an 11-day run at Radio City Music Hall. Frye attended the show with her husband, Joe, Saturday evening.
"It's like a ballet, it's just beautiful, I just love it, it's wonderful," said Chris during the intermission. Joe, an employee with the City water works, was equally impressed with the Splendor .
"This is very exciting. The tradition and the authentic type of dancing is very well done and everyone works exactly the same."
When asked which performance they liked the most, Joe replied that he really enjoyed the drums while Chris commented, "The waterfall and the lotus blossom, very nice, very nice. I'm excited to see the grand finale."
The couple found about the show while shopping at their local Costco after coming across a promotional display. "We thought, well, it's my birth year, and the Year of the Rat, and he's the year of the monkey, so we decided we should come," said Chris.
Referring to a New York Times article that published a negative review of the Splendor, Chris said the article prompted them to come see the show.
"We always make sure that, any reviews that are bad, we make sure that we go and see the show because we don't trust the reviewers. We don't know who they are, we don't know who they think they are, and 9 times out of 10, they're wrong."
