DARWIN—East Timor President Jose Ramos-Horta was today being flown to Darwin for further surgery following his wounding in a failed assassination attempt.

A critical response team had collected the president from an Australian medical base in Dili and would arrive in Darwin at about 4pm local time (5.30pm AEDT), said CareFlight spokesman Peter Murphy.

"He is still critical but in a stable condition," Mr Murphy told AAP.

Dr Ramos-Horta will be transferred from the airport to Royal Darwin Hospital (RDH), where he is expected to be taken immediately to the operating theatre.

"There will be further exploration of his wounds to ascertain the full extent of those wounds," said RDH general manager Dr Len Notaras.

Dr Ramos-Horta underwent emergency surgery at an Australian military hospital in Dili earlier today after being shot in the stomach during a rebel attack at his home.

Mr Murphy said Dr Ramos-Horta suffered two gunshot wounds to the upper body.
