NEW YORK—Although his school's beloved Yellow Jackets basketball team was playing against the University of Connecticut, Dr. Bernd Kahn, a radiochemical analyst and Professor Emeritus at Georgia Tech, decided to forgo the athletics and bring his family to the Chinese New Year Splendor at New York's Radio City Music Hall.
The Yellow Jackets lost to the University of Connecticut 68-80. But Dr. Kahn and his family felt no loss at the Splendor.
"We're all here together, we are enjoying it tremendously," said his wife Gail. "We usually go to the Metropolitan when we come to New York, but we wanted to bring our granddaughter and this was quite extraordinary."
When asked about her favorite performance, granddaughter Gwen admitted she liked them all. Dr. Kahn agreed. But Gail particularly enjoyed powerful tenor Hong Ming.
Dr. Kahn's family concluded that the Splendor was as good as a visit to the Metropolitan, and in some ways better.
While not familiar with Chinese culture, New Jersey-based chemist Michael Murphy also enjoyed the show.
"[The] staging was beautiful," he said. "The Tang drums were wonderful." He also particularly enjoyed the choreography of the water dance.
The Divine Performing Arts international touring companies land next in Germany and Japan.
