The curtain call for the cast of the 2008 Chinese New Year Spectacular met with standing ovations and thunderous applause at the packed Detroit Opera House on January 22.
Once in the lobby, audience members eagerly shared their thoughts about the performance. Upon witnessing authentic traditional Chinese performing arts and music, many people expressed gratitude and the hope that the show will return in the future.
"It's a big honor for Detroit and for Michigan to land this show," said a local business sponsor. "The show is very beautiful and a lovely display of the Chinese culture."
As with many audience members, she found the drumming thrilling. "It gets your blood flowing!"
Barbara-Rose Collins, Detroit city councilmember, said she thoroughly enjoyed the performance and hopes the Spectacular will be back next year. "People in this city need to see this diversity."
Collins said that the dance where teenage punks awaken upon witnessing the divine imparted a good message. "It's good for our children, our young people in Detroit."
According to the show's organizers, the Spectacular has become the largest overseas Chinese performance tour in the world, featuring as many as 100 dancers, vocalists and musicians.
With so many outstanding aspects in the Spectacular, deciding upon a favorite part could be difficult to determine.
"It would be hard to choose one aspect of the show I liked best because each one is unique and truly excellent," observed one audience member.
"The musicians were phenomenal. The voices and the young pianist playing are absolutely gorgeous. And, the Mongolian dancing is very exciting. We are looking forward to your coming back next year."
