SAN FRANCISCO—Brad, an engineering manager from the East Bay feels that the performances in the Chinese New Year Spectacular gave him an in-depth look at Chinese culture and history. "It's educational. It's just enjoyable."
"I actually like the history of it, and the way they were presenting the history. They were giving [us] a good cultural background that's 5,000 years old," comments Brad. "I'm learning about the history of the art and dance itself, and the movements of the dance. It's very different from European ballet or American dancing."
Brad has quite a bit of a connection to art and the orient. His wife is Chinese, his daughter is learning Chinese dance, and his niece is taking ballet. He admits that with all of this he still does not know that much about Chinese culture.
"I'm learning [more] about the stories and the history of the Gods; the story of the Sun and the other classic stories." He further commented that he had never heard any of these stories before, or at least, "Not at this level."
"I also liked the Water Sleeves … The movements were very slow and very meticulous."
While this was the first time seeing a show like this, Brad assures us that it will not be the last.
