SAN FRANCISCO—Chris, a product engineer hailing from Portland, Oregon, came all the way to San Francisco to watch the Chinese New Year Spectacular. He has seen Chinese shows before in the Philippines, but he said he finds the Spectacular very different—"It's more of a variety show. It's songs and art; this is totally different."
Vicki, a bookkeeper from Concord, felt the show was "lovely." She liked the Mongolian Bowl dance the most and was very impressed by the dancers' flexibility.
Vicki knows about Chinese culture—"I actually work with a lady from Hong Kong. I've worked with her for 20 years. [The performance] is fun. Where else can you go see other cultures like this, and just enjoy it?" Joe is Chinese, and while he feels that he was mostly familiar with the stories presented, he said, "You don't see these kinds of dances too often. It's different. It's ancient." When comparing the Spectacular to other Chinese shows, he said, "Nothing close to this. They try, but this is really good."
