SAN FRANCISCO—While westerners are in many cases introduced to Chinese culture through the Chinese New Year Spectacular, for Chinese, the show has deeper meaning and can be appreciated on a different level.

"The things the MCs talked about are very true about Chinese culture," says Richard Chio of Oakland. "You can sense the culture, in addition to the dance, costumes, etc.—it comes from inside their body, and this is very important," continued Chio.

Originally from Macau, Chio is an active human rights activist. He is the president of the American Hong Kong-Macau Democracy Association as well as board member of the Chinese Democracy Education Foundation based in San Francisco.

"The government TV shows in China have their media show every year but you can't find real Chinese religion and culture in the show," said Chio. "At this time they only care about money and economics."

"I am very happy I came here tonight and I hope this kind of show can be seen by Chinese everywhere, and also I hope this could be shown in mainland China," said Chio.

When asked which was his favorite performance, Chio replied, "All the performances were my favorite."
