LOS ANGELES—As Divine Performing Arts Chinese New Year Spectacular opened for its first night of performances at Los Angeles' Nokia Theatre during its recent West Coast tour, among those in attendance were a number of city council members and other local government officials.

As Westerners with occupations often representing large groups of East Asian constituents, they were in a unique position to bridge the cultural gap between traditional China and modern America.

One such official, the city of Carson councilwoman Lula Davis-Holmes, shared some of her feelings about the show. Initially, she heard about the show in a relatively straightforward manner,

"I received an invitation in the mail; it came right to City Council."

However, unlike the countless other event notices and invitations that are sent to such officials, there was something especially striking about this one. The size of its venue, Staples Center's neighbor, the mammoth new Nokia Theatre, marked it as a show on the largest of scales. Yet much of the show was very different from the usual fare of one of the nation's largest performing arts centers—its deep cultural content reflecting millennia of Chinese history.

"I've been to the Staples Center before, but I felt it would be a new experience to see all of this Chinese culture and this Chinese celebration!"

As a councilwoman representing a highly diverse area, Davis-Holmes could be expected to enjoy the varied cultural aspects of the performance, but when asked about one of the things she had been most looking forward to, she was quick to give a response to which anyone could relate.

"I was fascinated by the costumes!"

After 14 successful showings of the Chinese New Year Spectacular on the West Coast the Divine Performing Arts groups now travel to New York where they can be seen at Radio City Music Hall for 15 performances starting on Jan. 30.
