SAN FRANCISCO—Many who come to experience the Divine Performing Arts (DPA) Chinese New Year Spectacular come to satisfy their thirst to learn about Chinese culture.
What brought Scott Gaidano, a San Francisco business owner, to the Spectacular is his work. Like many business owners in the Bay Area, Gaidano often finds himself in China and as a result wants to learn more about the culture. The show provided him the perfect opportunity.
During intermission, Gaidano shared how he was struck by the difference between DPA's classical Chinese dance and ballet, stating: "I've never seen anything like it. I was so amazed at the movements of this show, it's better than ballet."
Gaidano also enjoyed the multi-million dollar backdrop animation that enhanced the performances.
"It was magical!" Gaidano exclaimed.
Gaidano's coworker, Michelle Davis, who is also a San Francisco dog walker, was impressed with the show. "I loved all of it, the costumes and music; the piano player was beautiful. I really appreciate all the different dances," Davis said.
Tony and Lori Gruff from Vallejo also found the show to be educational stating, "We learned more about the Chinese culture that you don't get to know on a regular basis; it was incredible."
Arash and Mayam are from Iran and now live in Pleasanton and are happy that they saw the show.
Mayam stated, "This was my first time, and I learned a lot about Chinese culture, and I'm grateful that I'm exposed to it now."
While her husband, Arash, mentioned that he liked the dance titled "Lady of the Moon" best.
Just a few seats away from the DPA orchestra sat Lily and her cousin who was visiting from Poland. They had not seen each other for 15 years.
They were excited about the show and her cousin from Poland said: "Everything was great, it was the meeting of a new culture for the first time in my life. Next year, if the show travels to Poland, I will definitely take my friends to go see it!"
Ed Chang, a local Chinese American living in San Francisco, felt that the Chinese culture shown in the Spectacular was "very well done!"
