SAN FRANCISCO—Divine Performing Arts Chinese New Year Spectacular came to a grand finale on Saturday, Jan. 26 at the Orpheum Theatre with two sold out shows. With a total of seven performances in San Francisco, the Spectacular was seen by thousands of Bay Area residents who were able to learn more about traditional Chinese classical dance and culture.
During intermission, Ofelia Fischman from Mill Valley, shared how she had heard about the Spectacular through an advertisement and invited her friend Liz to come along.
Fischman, who describes herself as a person passionate about art, told us that she loved the Spectacular.
Her first impressions were, "The show is so beautiful, the costumes, the gracefulness and the way they dance and the pictures in the background are very realistic. You feel that there is life in this world and compassion and caring, everything is there."
Fischman's friend Liz, who is originally from Russia, told us that she understood how traditional culture, meditation, and religion can be persecuted in communist countries.
Among the acts in the Spectacular some depict the persecution of Falun Gong in China and the suppression of China's traditional culture.
Fischman added, "I really, truly loved the show! I have seen ballet but this is different. I think everyone should see this show, it is fantastic, it makes you feel really happy, and there is something about it, it is really like magic when you see it. Everything is really nice!"

Chris Lyons, who works in data recovery in Marin County, came with his daughter and at intermission shared his impressions.
"Oh! Very enjoyable, very nice, very Spectacular! It's a lot of fun! I love to see the Chinese culture, the beauty of the dancing, the music the singing, the drums, all of it is very unique and very nice to see."
His 9-year-old daughter Stella, in the fourth grade in San Raphael, also enjoyed the show very much.
She said that although everything looked effortless, "It is probably more difficult than what it seems."
Lyons heard about the Spectacular through a colleague at work and came with a group of 12 other colleagues and their families.
"We will have a lot to talk about on Monday," he said.
After seven successful showings of the Chinese New Year Spectacular in San Francisco, the Divine Performing Arts groups now travels to New York where they can be seen at Radio City Music Hall for 15 performances starting on Jan. 30.
