CHICAGO—Chicagoans attending the closing performance of the Chinese New Year Spectacular on Saturday night at Arie Crown Theater were full of enthusiasm for the show.
Hugh Savage, a physician, said, "I'm extremely impressed with what I've seen here tonight. I particularly liked the theme of spiritual awareness that runs throughout all the performances."
Savage's wife, Alexandra, had seen the show last year. She said, "I'm amazed all over again! I had no idea that traditional Chinese dance and music are so beautiful."
Mr. Collins, from Collin Park Illinois, said "I thoroughly enjoyed the combination of athleticism and artistry—this is a very special performance. I really enjoyed the 'Mongolian Bowl Dance.' I think that the persecution of the Falun Gong is most tragic. I had no idea." Andrew Sputerra is a designer that lives in Chicago. He said that he's lived in Taipei, Shanghai and Hong Kong, so he has some idea of what's going on in that part of the world.
"I especially understand what's happening in China right now," he said. "The show was beautiful! I've traveled to Asia, so watching a show like this really resonates with me. The costumes and all the colors are really beautiful."
"It's really sad that a group like the Falun Gong are being imprisoned for their ideals," said Mr. Fas. "I was able to visit China in 1991, and saw a theatrical show there, but it didn't compare to this. What a wonderful performance!"
Milu and Paula, both from Chicago, said that they wouldn't change anything about the show. "Really beautiful! We both loved 'The Drummers of the Tang Court' as well as the 'Snowy Mountain, White Lotus' performances. We found the whole show uplifting."
Thomas Malvar, a Chicago resident and a urologist at Saint Mary's Hospital said he also loved "The Snowy Mountain, White Lotus" dance. "I felt that it had a spiritual theme. I wouldn't change anything about the show, all the performances are excellent!"
"My favorite performance was "Drummers of the Tang Court" said Peter Yu, a political science student. He said that he really enjoyed hearing the blend of traditional Chinese with western instruments. He also said, "It's good to call attention to the suppression of spirituality in China."
