CHICAGO—"I like the drums," said Emron Walwyn, a medical student at UIC on Saturday night at Chicago's Arie Crown Theater. "I just like the sound of them."

Walwyn is referring to a beloved segment in the world-renowned Chinese New Year Spectacular. The production features the Divine Performing Arts, a performance company specializing in reviving the classical music and dance of ancient China.

"I try to come every year," said Walwyn, who has been to the Spectacular for three years in a row. He had just seen the show's farewell Chicago performance.

"One girl did a performance where she was on her knees spinning around," he said. "That was pretty cool."

"I really like the solo performances too," he said referring to both the featured singers and instrumentalists. "And I always look forward to the Erhu."

Walwyn was accompanied by a friend who he wanted to introduce to this unique production—a production that brings him back every time its in Chicago. Walwyn said he tries to let people know what a special performance this is.

"I tell a lot of people about it, but they don't understand at first what a Chinese Gala is. So I explain it by showing some pictures and talking about the performances," he said.

"I tell them this is a cultural event. It's a chance to learn about another culture," said Walwyn. "It's organic."
