CHICAGO—Sometimes examining our uniqueness makes our similarities more evident. This was exactly what Carlos Villacorta-Hernandez found when he attended the Divine Performing Arts "Chinese New Year Spectacular" Saturday evening.
Carlos is a high school history teacher at Farragut High School in Chicago. Although the performance was a showcase of traditions from a culture that originated on the opposite side of the globe, Carlos expressed a feeling of deep kinship with the Asian community after watching the show.
Carlos spent some time in the Orient during his service in the armed forces. He temporarily lived in both Korea and Shanghai. Although he did not speak the language, his general feeling when living in Asia was that "we are all brothers and sisters."
The blend of Western and Chinese cultures exhibited in the Spectacular struck a deep resonance with him. Having a Venezuelan father and mother of Mexican-Irish descent, Carlos has deep Latino roots. "We are all immigrants," stated Carlos.
Having seen a Chinese New Year show only once previously in Toronto, Carlos said that Divine Performing Arts Company display was outstanding. "The show was captivating!" Carlos plans to buy tickets for all of his friends when the Spectacular returns to Chicago next year.
