CHICAGO—On Friday in Chicago, one woman's determination allowed her to realize her long-time wish to see the Chinese New Year Spectacular, while others happened to come into the show through a lucky chance.
Stephanie Robinson, a graduate student from Chicago and her friend Catina Harris, were very glad to finally be able to attend the show. Stephanie said, "I've wanted to see this show for three years now, but something always came up, and so I could never make it.
"However, this year I was determined to come. I had even been sick earlier today, But I wasn't going to miss it this time for anything. I'm so glad that I did! I loved every minute of it! The show is very graceful and beautiful."
Stephane and Catina agreed that their favorite part was the "Mongolian Bowl Dance". "There are two shows in Chicago tomorrow, and I think that everyone should come out and see it!"
Sandy DeBankel is a native of Peru who now lives in Indiana. She is a merchandiser for crafts from Peru and Ecuador. "I actually came to Chicago this weekend to participate in a conference that's being held at McCormick Place [the site of the Arie Crown Theater where the show was held]. I was handed a flyer this afternoon, and that's how I heard about the Spectacular.
"My favorite performance was 'The Fruits of Goodness' when the two young men were transformed after receiving the good words from the deities in the temple. I've enjoyed this show very much, and feel that I've gained more insight into Chinese culture. I definitely plan to come to Chicago to see the Spectacular again next year!"
Michelle Gupta, a computer programmer, and a Chicago resident saw the Spectacular with her husband. "It feels very soothing and peaceful just sitting here in the theatre. The dances are absolutely amazing and choreography is wonderful. I loved the digital background also." Michelle and her husband both agreed that the "Mongolian Bowl Dance" was their favorite performance.
Becky Able and her husband had actually come to McCormick Place for another show that had taken place earlier in the day on Friday. The couple lives in Bloomington Indiana, and had never had an opportunity to see the show. They had been given a flyer and decided to stay and see it.
Mr. Able said that he really enjoyed the very powerful "Drummers of the Tang Court". He has always been interested in Chinese culture, so he feels he has a greater appreciation of what he saw.
Ms. Able said that she couldn't believe how effortlessly the dancers were able to move across the stage. "It' almost as though they're floating" she enthused.
