Chicago theatre-goers experienced an evening of beauty and amazement as the city hosted the Chinese New Year Spectacular for the third consecutive year. The Divine Performing Arts Company performed in the Arie Crown Theatre at McCormick Place Friday night in its first of three Chicago performances.

Featuring traditionally inspired music and dance of ancient China, the Spectacular is a unique production. Many theatre goers came from outlying suburbs or even within the city, while others traveled a greater distance to see this special show. David Keaton, an instrument technician from Portage, Indiana, said his trip was well worth it.

Keaton, who received his tickets from a friend, was very pleased that he made the drive on such a cold night. "I thought the show was very interesting," he replied.

"My wife is Filipino, so I've seen a lot of the Filipino traditional dances. I like Asian culture," said Keaton.

While he couldn't select a favorite segment, Keaton was especially drawn to the dances; he was captivated by their unique and graceful movements. He noticed that the elements these traditional Chinese dances demonstrated encompassed a broad range of technique and skill.

Aside from merely enjoying an exotic aesthetic, Keaton noticed the performance had also taught him a great deal. "It's interesting to learn something about the culture," he exclaimed.

"The vast cultures of China are something you don't think so much about. Chinese people are really a very diverse subject," observed Keaton.
