CHICAGO—Quilter Marion Purcelli was among the enthusiastic audience of the Chinese New Year Spectacular represented at Chicago's Arie Crown Theater on Friday evening.
A long-time resident of Chicago, Purcelli left the show saying it was "very exciting." Purcelli said she was particularly impressed with the quality of the choreography.
"I am amazed that how simple the choreography [is]—classical ballet or even modern ballet. Yet it just totally entrances me and holds me," said Purcelli.
Friday's show was the first Chinese cultural performance Purcelli has ever seen. She was invited to the show by her niece, who is a high-school principle in the Chicago area.
A former Lifestyle editor of the Chicago Tribune, Purcelli showed great interest in the costume of one of the dances.
"I love the costume of the Tibetan dancers, the ones that have long sleeves that assimilated as scarves".
She added that, "One and another, they [the performance] all had their own uniqueness. I guess I like them all."
Entering its third year in Chicago, the Chinese New Year Spectacular is a performance of traditional Chinese dance and music.
