CHICAGO—A crisp, cold evening with a light snow is the perfect backdrop to a wondrous adventure of color and music. The Divine Performing Arts Company held the first of three performances at Arie Crown Theater on Friday night.
Izabela Kiszewska, a mortgage consultant told us "I loved the diversity of costumes [throughout the different shows] and the dancing accompaniment of each performance."
She was moved by one performance in which the persecution of several Falun Dafa practitioners was depicted. Being of Polish decent she said "I could identify with the communist regime theme within the performance." Izabela also liked the hosts, she thought they were cute.
Mathew Alexander, a Real Estate Broker liked the acrobatics, and variety of dancing, stating that "it was not as rigid as ballet, and it was more relaxed"
Mathew also shared that"It [several performances] showed a good representation of [negative] Communist rule."
Another group came after a wonderful Chinese dinner at the Phoenix restaurant. This group of Whitney Young High School students and their counselor took in the Chinese New Year Spectacular as part of a cultural diversity awareness program. This group is the schools' representation on the Chicago area TV show "Know Your Heritage."
In preparation for this year's championship the eight students are learning about other cultures and how they contributed to making Chicago great. In speaking with the counselor, she said she "loved the vivid colors and costumes. It was a feast for the eyes!"
After going through a process that included the writing of a grant to the "Friends of Whitney Young" and competing with other programs for available funds, this group braved the cold and snowy weather to take in the opening show for this years Chinese New Year's Celebration.
"The music and choreography was lovely!" Ms. Parks said as she gathered her students and got ready to go home.
One audience member was completely taken with the passion of the performers during the production. He came not knowing what to expect, but he says the majesty, honesty, and honor with which the Chinese New Year Spectacular is performed moved him profoundly.
