SAN FRANCISCO—As a heavy storm swept through San Francisco, throngs of theatergoers shielded themselves with umbrellas against the whipping wind and rain. They braved the inclement weather to come to the stately Orpheum Theatre to watch the internationally- acclaimed Chinese New Year Spectacular show.

"The weather is cold, but the heavy rain couldn't stop us from coming to the show," said Melissa Williams who came to San Francisco with her co-workers Reyna and Carmen.

The excited theatergoers found out about the show when someone passed them an advertising pamphlet about the Spectacular .

"I looked it up on the website, and it just looked really beautiful," Williams said.

The theme of the Spectacular is based on ancient heroic myths and legends from the greatest Chinese dynasties. The show's mission, according to event organizers, is to charm audiences by transporting them back in time to explore the 5,000 years of Chinese civilization.

Performed by Divine Performing Arts, the Chinese Spectacular presents vocal and orchestral components, as well as visual extravaganza of Chinese classical dance, stunning traditional costumes, and dramatic backdrop animation.

"We decided to treat ourselves to the show, just as a reward for all of our hard work," said Williams, who works at the Four Points Sheraton Hotel in Emeryville.

Becky Hogue from San Francisco came with her husband and a friend to see the show.

"It's an awful day," said Hogue referring to the high winds and heavy rain, "But we've heard that the show will play in San Francisco for just a few days only, so the rain and the gloomy weather couldn't discourage us."

"I've enjoyed Chinese culture ever since I visited Hong Kong," said Carol Evans, a retired school teacher. "I'm really looking forward to watching the show. Considering the bad weather we came to see the Spectacular's afternoon matinee, so we could get back home at a decent hour.

"I expect to see a lot of beauty, visuals, and interesting music. A Chinese friend of mine gave us the tickets because he knows that we love Chinese culture and that I love going to China. Our daughter has never been to China, so this is going to be an experience for her."

The Chinese New Year Spectacular will be at San Francisco's Orpheum Theater, at 2:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m. on Jan. 25-26.

Beginning on Jan. 30, the NTDTV Chinese New Year Splendor will play for 15 shows at Radio City Music Hall in New York City.
