A Joyous Celebration

Reflection of the 'Chinese New Year Spectacular' in San Diego

SAN DIEGO, CA—As the curtains drew back, a scene of peaceful wonder met the eyes of audience members at the California Center of the Arts of San Diego. With a song of joyful elegance lending to the intricately graceful movements of the dancers, the performance of the 2008 Chinese New Year Spectacular had begun.

With its first performance having taken place on Tuesday, Jan. 15, and the final show in San Diego two days later; San Diego was graced with four performances.

Tina, a San Diego resident originally from Hong Kong said, "Oh, it's spectacular! It's just beautiful! The choreography, beautiful costumes, and this is very new to me, even the background graphics incorporates with the dance and the whole theme. I think this is wonderful, very refreshing. It is just lovely."

Featuring a wide array of ethnic dances and stories told through Chinese classical dance, and tied together by insightful songs and various instruments; the show continued to wow audience members with each segment.

"It was wonderful. It was very, very good. Very professional, and I loved the variety, the dances, and the singing. It was a nice combination. The costumes were gorgeous. The backgrounds were very artistic," said Jackie Arisa, "The dances were very intricate. I just loved the way the women moved; especially, the steps, it was great."

Jackie, a preschool teacher from Oakland, California had come to see the show with her daughter, Lorna. "Oh I loved it. It was really great! Relaxing, calming, and exciting all at the same time!" said Lorna.

As a journey across dynasties, the show presented the essence of ancient Chinese culture. Presented in a manner of purity and beauty, many audience members said that they were very moved by the performance.

Angela Estacio, a CNA in San Diego said, "It was just beautiful. The costumes are so vibrant! It touched me, I was almost in tears. Everything was very good. I'd recommend it to everyone!"

The Chinese New Year Spectacular is continuing its world tour of more than 65 cities. It is finishing up at San Francisco's Orpheum Theater before moving onto Radio City Music Hall in New York on Jan. 30.
