MINNEAPOLIS—They had only seen half the show, but the audience at Minneapolis's first ever performance of the Divine Performing Arts Chinese New Year Spectacular were already fans.

"I think it's great, I didn't really know what to expect coming into it," said Becky Roehl during the intermission at last night's show.

"Beautiful colors and the movement. It's amazing, I love it."

She said that of the performances she had seen so far her favorite featured Chinese drums. Another favorite was the Mongolian Bowl Dance. In this performance female dancers whirl around the stage with tea bowls balanced delicately on their heads. It is not shown until the end of the performance that the bowls are just resting on top of each other and are not glued on.

"My husband and I actually asked each other if the other thought they were glued on and we were questioning it," said Roehl.

Roehl and her husband also brought their two children. She said both enjoyed the show, especially her daughter.

"They love it."

"I really like them all, they're all great," she said of the performances she had seen so far.

Roehl said she hopes to come to the show again next year. "I would like to bring some extra people too."

Dorothy Groom heard about the Spectacular through a television commercial and brought a friend to enjoy it with her.

"I thought it was absolutely gorgeous, it's beautiful to see something from the culture of China, especially with the Olympics coming up," said Groom.

"Fascinating, it really was beautiful," she added.

Groom said she especially enjoyed the female dancers and the drummers.

"I loved the drummers, they were fantastic."

By the end of its tour, the Spectacular will have played to a total live audience of 650,000 in over 60 cities and 14 countries in North America, Asia, Europe, and Oceania.

The Chinese New Year Spectacular will be at San Francisco's Orpheum Theater, at 2:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m., and the Arie Crown Theater in Chicago Jan. 25-26.

Beginning on Jan. 30, the NTDTV Chinese New Year Splendor will play for 15 shows at Radio City Music Hall in New York City.
