SAN FRANCISCO—The skies outside were cloudy and gloomy, but inside San Francisco's Orpheum Theatre, the audience enjoyed a bright and lively show, the Chinese New Year Spectacular . The performance Wednesday afternoon was the first of seven shows to play in the City by the Bay, running Jan. 23-26.
The Spectacular features traditional Chinese dancers, singers, and musicians, a treat even here in this cosmopolitan city on the West Coast. The show is traveling around the world, bringing the joy of Chinese New Year to people in more than 65 cities.
Felicia Jackson is an activities assistant for a retirement home in San Francisco who wore a smile as she walked out of the theatre. She enjoyed everything she saw commenting: "It was awesome… all kinds of bright costumes, and dancing."
Jackson continued, "It is something I have never seen before. It was very exciting to see. I enjoyed it."
When asked what she learned about Chinese culture she responded: "The costumes were beautiful."
Dozens of costumes were hand made for the Spectacular , highlighting the essence of the greatest dynasties in China's 5,000-year history.
Jackson heard about the show from one of the residents in the retirement home where she works. Word of mouth seems to be the way that many locals heard about the show.
"I would come back again, because I liked it," Jackson concluded.
