DETROIT—The Chinese New Year Spectacular, in its first appearance in Michigan, premiered Tuesday night at The Detroit Opera House to an almost sold out audience.
Howard Splete, a retired professor of psychology at Oakland University who resides in Rochester Hills, MI has seen 4 different Chinese shows in the last year. He said that, "The Spectacular had more variety, it had tremendous costumes, staging, and synchronized movements. Not just the movements of the dancers, but how the background actually moved to synchronize with what the dancers were doing, it was incredible."
His wife Marlene, said that, "Each and every little thing fit each mood that was set, it was amazing." Her favorite part was the little girl who played an amazing piano solo.
Derek Sibel, a mover from Howell, MI said that his favorite part of the show was the dance "Water Fairies."
Themmie Besario, who is an engineer for Lear said that her favorite performances were "Water Fairies" and "The Confucius Scholar".
Besario said, "This performance reminded me of the importance of getting back to basics. Forgetting about material things, and putting people first. If we go back to basics there will be no wars, and people will be at peace."

Pat Corbett, a secretary said, "It was very nice and colorful!" She especially liked the narrators, saying that they were extremely funny.
Myrna Hahn, a retired school teacher said, "It was very interesting, I've never seen anything like it. It's a wonderful combination of opera and ballet."
Alicia Bicknell, a stay-at-home mom said, "It had lots of variety! I had no idea what we were coming to see, but I was so impressed by the upper body movements of the dancers! I really liked the drum performances as well.
"My daughter is taking a course on Asian Studies at college called Arts & Letter of China where she is learning about all things China, so naturally she has found this performance to be very educational as well as entertaining."
Anna Lacombe of Rochester Hills said, "We came because my friend is Chinese and I learned about the show through her at the Wayne Senior Center. Next year we'll be sure to tell my Tai Chi instructor as well as everyone in my class about the show. I loved it, the way the dancers moved. People talk about being double-jointed, well these people looked like they were quadruple-jointed!"
