LAS VEGAS— The Chinese New Year Spectacular, showcasing 5,000 years of Chinese history and civilization, opened tonight for one show only at Las Vegas' Hilton Hotel.
The show attracted many theatergoers for an evening of traditional music and dance capping off the long holiday weekend.
Among those who attended a VIP party before the main event were freelance writer Chuck N. Baker, and his wife, Linda Guiffreda-Baker, an art teacher.
Baker has a longstanding involvement and connection with the Chinese community which led him to be invited to Taiwan and China as a guest of the government.
Baker recalled the earlier days in Las Vegas, "All the big shows in Vegas had live orchestras, now, to hear a live orchestra is a real thrill!"
The Spectacular features a live orchestra combining the best of Western and Eastern classical instruments.
"[I was] overwhelmed by the colors which floated across the audience, and in awe of the synchronization in dancing."

"I thought everything was fantastic; I am impressed with the whole presentation," he added.
His wife Linda was "overwhelmed by the colors which floated across the audience, and in awe of the synchronization in dancing."
"I was very respectful of how much culture they have, it reminds me of how young we are as a nation, how storytelling goes on and on until the present time," Linda remarked.
Linda went on, "The backdrop added to the mysticism of the storytelling conveying the message," and to see the live music on stage, "Now that was incredible."
"Like having dessert without the calories," concluded Linda.
Baker lives in Las Vegas, where he is involved in the Chinese community. He's written articles about Chinese culture including Chinese New Year celebrations. He also participated in a flag raising ceremony in honor of Dr. Sun Yet Sun.
His wife Linda teaches art and has many Chinese students from mainland China and is interested in learning about their culture. One of her Chinese students brings pastries baked by the student's grandmother, which Linda enjoys.
The Chinese New Year Spectacular moves on to San Francisco for seven shows running Jan. 23-26.
