Invited by his co-worker to attend the Chinese New Year Spectacular playing at Toronto's Sony Centre, Errol Taylor said the Divine Performing Arts' Spectacular was unique among modern theatrical shows.
"Very cultural, very interesting. I've never been to it before, my technical support guy invited us to it and I loved it, it was very cultural," he said.
The Spectacular ended its final show Sunday to a standing ovation. Audiences praised the show for its grand presentation of traditional Chinese culture. Many, like Taylor, praised it for striving to present the goodness inherent in humanity.
"That's something you don't see much of. It's a family oriented show and that made it beautiful for a change because so many things are happening these days where it isn't family orientation anymore. Here you get to learn culture and history. It was beautiful," he said.
Taylor also revealed that it was the gentler aspects of the show that impressed him the most.
"Actually, the one that really touched me was the young student that played the piano. She was very beautiful. And then the finale, that was just stunning from the time it opened to the time it closed. That part of it was great. I enjoyed most of all the drumming though, on each different sections that they had drumming, that was very enticing."
Taylor said the drumming he is familiar with is more vibrant and upbeat whereas this was "more reserved and more calm."
"It was more relaxing...but at the same time it was still beautiful—like easy listening as opposed to harder jargon."
