Throughout its five-show run at Toronto's Sony Centre, the Chinese New Year Spectacular never failed to entertain and delight theatre-goers with its presentation of authentic Chinese culture.
"Excellent! I'm overwhelmed," said Ontario Member of provincial parliament (MPP) for Hamilton East Paul Miller.
"I'm overwhelmed by the pageantry, the colors and the dancing ability of the cast. The male counterparts with the drumming were very impressive," said Miller, who came to see the show with his wife, Carole.
Miller said he found recurring themes of unity, diversification, love, and harmony expressed in "a lovely manner" throughout the show.
"[One of the dances] showed unity and strength together and I think that's what the world needs, unity and strength and less violence and persecution," said Miller.
Miller said he hopes the show expands to visit more North American cities, adding that he is sure the Spectacular is going to "turn a lot of heads."
Carole Miller, a teacher and children's book author and a former freelance journalist, said she was very impressed with the values the Spectacular is "teaching".
"I'm a very strong believer in diversity and multiculturalism. I actually wrote a children's book called One Enchanted Moonlight and it's an antiracism book and it's being used in Hamilton, where I'm from. It celebrates diversity but it advocates harmony and I think that's what your show is doing also," she said.
She also said she hopes to see these kinds of shows shown to young people and school students.
"As a teacher I think that young people need this so much. They need that sense that there are wonderful spiritual values out in the world and we need to connect with them from all faiths."
She said they would come back to see the show again next year.
After Toronto, the Spectacular will continue on its world tour, playing in the U.S., Japan, Korea, Paris, Singapore and Australia before heading to Vancouver, Calgary and Edmonton in the spring.
