SAN DIEGO—The Divine Performing Arts company of New York performed its third Chinese New Year Spectacular at the California Center for the Arts, in Escondido, on Jan. 16. Local Chinese in the audience had high praise for the show.

Professor Tao Yuan, who teaches electrical engineering at the University of California San Diego, came to the show with his wife, an IBM employee. Mr. Tao enjoyed the show for its unique Chinese style, "I haven't seen anything like it in the U.S.

"The show puts a lot of emphasis on the artistic presentation and is very professional. I like the show with drums from the Tang dynasty—the color and design of the costumes are impressive," Mr. Tao said.

His wife, Ms. Zhu, added, "I liked the performance 'The Loyalty of Yue Fei.' She especially liked the Tang drums. "It's a quality show."

Dr. Lai, an ophthalmologist, and her daughter Cindy attended the show and enjoyed all the programs. "An English [language] newspaper said the show involved Falun Gong and that Beijing tried to interfere. I didn't realize it until now. I think the show is great and presents Chinese classical art," said Dr. Lai.

"I like the variety of the show. There are many beautiful costumes. My favorite one is the 'Water Sleeves' dance. It is so beautiful and synchronized," her daughter Cindy said.
