LOS ANGELES—The final performances of the Los Angeles run of the Chinese New Year Spectacular culminated into majestic pageantry of traditional Chinese music and Dance at the Nokia theatre Sunday afternoon.
Treated to the show by a friend, Rabbi Julie Pelc, from Venice Beach, who has a deep appreciation for dance and tradition in particular, attended the matinee performance.
"It is amazing how gracefully the powerful, cultural and political, are transformed into art," observed Pelc, of the performances.
Pelc noted the "interesting juxtaposition and integration of east and west" evident in the 'Lady of the Moon' piece.
"Something I am finding as I watch the show is the strong similarities between Jewish and Chinese theologies – a belief in a just God who desires good to triumph, and the equally strong need for humans to fight oppression with all their might"
"So clearly", she adds, "This art is reflective of a rich history honoring grace, beauty, but also depth."
The Spectacular will show next in Las Vegas on Jan. 21, then to Detroit on Jan. 22, and San Francisco from Jan. 23–26.
