LOS ANGELES—This Saturday afternoon Jan. 19, the Chinese New Year Spectacular graced the stage of the Nokia L.A. Live Theatre in Los Angeles, California. The show, put on by New York-based Divine Performing Arts, is a grand display of Chinese culture, featuring dance and music.
During intermission, Marie Galvez, originally from Spain, said she came from San Diego today to see the performance, and heard about the show through the San Diego YMCA. Marie is a sales representative who has traveled extensively throughout Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore, Bali, and Jakarta. She appreciates traditional Chinese culture, folklore, and has studied the language as well.
Marie said she strongly feels that public schools should bring children to see the show to experience the art and a different culture, "not only pop music."
Anne Leer came today with her senior group from Palos Verdes. She enjoyed the beauty of the show and her favorite part was the Water Nymph performance. Anne plans to tell her Chinese friend that she walks with about the show, as well as other Chinese acquaintances.
Hoa and Pho Nguyen, originally from Vietnam, came from Irvine to see the show for the third year in a row. Hoa said "this year is the best; we like it the best!"
Dan Kirman, from Duarte, Ca., has a plumbing business near the theater, recently celebrating its 100th anniversary. Dan was interested in bringing his daughter Annika, who studies Chinese dance in Temple City, to the see the show. They both were pleased with the Spectacular.
Michael and Stephanie Chen, originally from Taiwan, brought their family to the theater today. They live in Roland Heights, where the children are actively involved in the performing arts. The Chen family had fun viewing the show for the second year.
The Spectacular will be in Los Angeles for two more shows, tonight at 8 p.m. and Sunday afternoon at 2 pm. Following with the Hilton Theater in Las Vegas on Jan. 21, then the Orpheum Theater in San Francisco from Jan. 23–26.
