TORONTO—The Chinese New Year Spectacular helps broaden people's knowledge and perspectives of China, says the chair of the National Ethnic Press and Media Council of Canada.

Clyde McNeil, himself a broadcaster with Toronto's CHIN Radio, returned to see the Spectacular Saturday afternoon at the Sony Centre for the Performing Arts after seeing last year's show.

"I thought that the show was fabulous," said McNeil. "It never ceases to amaze me."

"It is a great production, and the way they work together – it's out of this world," he said, adding: "The colours were just great . . . The colours put this show way above [others], and the movements put it in the top shelf."

McNeil pointed one dance depicting the peaceful resistance of Falun Gong practitioners in China to persecution by the Chinese communist regime.

"The imagery was just great so you looked at it and you know exactly what the story was about."

This year, McNeil brought a friend, Tyrell, who also enjoyed the show.

"It was interesting – lots of talent," he said. "The part where they were showing people how to show love to other people, how to get along, that was my favourite part.

"I'm coming next year," he concluded.

McNeil would like to encourage more people to attend the Chinese New Year Spectacular .

"Everybody should come and see it and it will widen people's knowledge about Chinese culture, and it will also make them aware of what's happening within the Chinese context in the world today and it will broaden their whole vision of China and the Chinese people."

Others will get their chance to enjoy the Spectacular.

The Saturday matinee was the second of five shows in Toronto. After Toronto, the Spectacular will continue on its global tour, which includes an 11-day run at the legendary Radio City Music Hall in New York, called the Chinese New Year Splendor .

The Spectacular returns to Canada in the spring for to play in Vancouver, Edmonton, and Calgary. By the end of its tour, it will have played to a total live audience of 650,000 in over 60 cities and 14 countries.
