TORONTO—The Chinese New Year Spectacular opened to a packed theatre in Toronto tonight, kicking off a three-day run at the Sony Centre for the Performing Arts (formerly the Hummingbird Centre).

"It's wonderful for me to be here―what a spectacular show!" commented Colin Carrie, Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Industry. He was hard-pressed to choose a favorite program, but liked the drums and the Mongolian tea dance, and remarked that the costumes were fantastic.

"When you experience something like this tonight, it is really an experience of divine spirit. It reminds people that it's part of us."

"Perfect artists remind you of the divine presence in the world because healing does come from within," he added, touching on his background as a chiropractor.

The Spectacular is presented by New York-based Divine Performing Arts, which "demands of itself that its performances present works of consummate beauty and goodness," the group's web site says.

The performance was a "divine experience," Carrie said. "It's hard not be moved by this when you see something like that. I really enjoyed it. It was really wonderful."

An event like the Spectacular is a real testament to the growth of Asian culture in Canada, he commented. "We often hear about Chinese contribution to business. I think Canada can use more of performing arts of Chinese culture. It's wonderful to see something like this; I think everyone would enjoy it."

Divine Performing Arts' 65-city, four-continent world tour will return to Vancouver, Edmonton, and Calgary in the spring.
