The Canadian premiere of the Divine Performing Arts Chinese New Year Spectacular played to an enthusiastic crowd at the National Arts Centre in Ottawa on Sunday evening, January 13.
Among those in the audience was businessman Shi Xingjian, who not only bought a ticket for himself but helped many of his friends buy tickets as well.
After seeing the show, the jewelry store owner said he was glad that he had done so. He shared his deep impressions when interviewed by The Epoch Times.
"I have never seen such a good show," he remarked. "Even Chinese people don't have many chances to see such good Chinese performances."
He enjoyed the Manchu dance in particular. However, he was especially moved by the dance performance depicting Falun Gong practitioners holding a banner with the message "Truthfulness, Compassion, and Forbearance," the principles of their spiritual practice, which is currently suppressed in communist China.
It was a story of "ordinary citizens defending justice," he said. "I believe that as long as the populace is of one mind, the evil will fear them."
Shi's opinion is that in addition to the Spectacular's artistic value, even more important is the spiritual aspect that it conveys to people, giving people guidance and bringing them to a closer awareness of the realm of the divine.
"After seeing the show, I also felt sad," he said, "because cruel persecution of my fellow countrymen in Mainland China is continuing to take place. I hope it will end as soon as possible."
In the Spectacular, both ancient and modern stories Chinese unfold on stage through classical Chinese dance and music with an authenticity that is said to be completely unique in the world today.
This is spurring something of a renaissance of traditional culture in the Chinese art community and is drawing the attention and admiration of audiences around the world.
The New York-based Divine Performing Arts will play in Toronto from Jan, 18 – 20, including two matinees.
