BOSTON—The Chinese New Year Spectacular held at Boston's Opera House on January 12 attracted many Chinese people. They all felt that the Chinese culture portrayed in the show is the authentic traditional culture of China. They said the show is a true spectacular and makes a perfect celebration of the Chinese New Year.
Mr. Chen Qing and his wife Chen Lan emigrated to the U.S. 30 years ago from Hong Kong. Mr. Chen has been delving into Chinese traditional literature after his retirement from the banking business. His wife saw an advertisement for the show in the Chinese version of The Epoch Times and wanted very much to attend. Mr. Chen came only to accompany his wife.
He didn't feeling like talking much before the show. However, after watching the first half of it, he became very excited. "This is the authentic Chinese culture!" he said joyfully. "Such traditional cultural performances cannot even be seen in China. You know the dances in mainland China have all changed and they are no longer traditional."
Mr. Chen said his favorite program was the first dance, "Descent of the Celestial King." "It represents the idea that'heaven and man are one,'" said Chen. Mrs. Chen added, "Indeed, now we have nowhere to find this kind of traditional Chinese style, and it is even harder to see it in U.S. Also, the programs are very compact and the costumes are really beautiful."
Mr. Zheng Zhikai, an electrical engineer who emigrated to the U.S. from Thailand 20 years ago, drove for more than one hour from New Hampshire with his wife and son to watch the show. His wife, Xie Huiling, a pharmacist, received a flyer for the Spectacular on the street, which made possible their enjoyment of the long lost authentic Chinese culture.
The Zheng family was very happy and they could not stop smiling even after the show was over. "This is the right feeling for Chinese people to celebrate the New Year," said Zheng.
Zheng's favorite program was the "Manchu Court Dance." "It really captures the spirit of China's culture. I only saw princesses of the Qing Dynasty in movies. Now they walked, alive, in front of me," exclaimed Zheng.
Ms. Zhang Hua came from China's Guangdong Province 10 years ago. She happened to be visiting her friends in Boston when the show was going on. It was her first time watching the Chinese New Year Spectacular and she just could not help adoring it. "Every program is so fabulous, and the costumes are extremely beautiful! They are all authentic Chinese style, and the dances are of pure Chinese flavor."
She and her friend both favored the first dance, "Descent of Celestial Kings" and said "the astrosphere is wonderful."
