Playing at Montreal's Place des Arts from Jan. 15-17, the Chinese New Year Spectacular has drawn high praise from theatre-goers who were thrilled with its large-scale dance routines, combination of Chinese and western orchestral music and colourful state-of-the art digital backdrops.
Denise Leduc, who attended Wednesday's show, invited both her daughter and her son's fiance to see the Spectacular.
Leduc's future daughter-in-law, Chloe Liu, is from Taiwan and was so thrilled with the show she wants to invite her own parents and extended family to see it.
"I think the show is excellent, I really liked it," said Liu. "The dances and the costumes are beautiful, and the drumming act is very good."
Leduc said she particularly liked the "serenity" imparted by the dances, something rarely expressed in most western entertainment.
"I liked the music, the way they dress, everything is so beautiful. The dances are perfect, and the dancers are so elegant and so quiet."
Leduc also praised the hosts of the Spectacular, who spoke in both English and Chinese.
"They were very good. They seemed to tell us 'we are pleased to see you, you are a part of this.' I like that very much."
"I will be back next year," says Leduc, who comes to Place des Arts often and is familiar with Chinese music.
Leduc' daughter, who normally works as a dietician, says she's a stay-at-home mom right now with two small children.
"I liked the show because it permitted me to think of something else — it made me travel in my mind a little bit."
