Montreal's Place des Arts, a hub for the arts in North America, has been centre stage for the finest elements of Chinese culture this past few days with a four-show run of the Chinese new Year Spectacular.
"Excellent from A to Z!" enthused Huguette Martel, a primary school teacher who attended the matinee on Wednesday. She was most impressed by the drumming act and and the myth of the water fairies.
Ginette Charron, a dietitian, attended the show with her 11-year-old daughter Li-Anne, her adopted Chinese daughter. She wanted her daughter to know about the Chinese culture.
"Very beautiful and colourful costumes. The girls are gracious, the boys have energy. The hosts are funny," said Charron.
"It's super! I will tell my Chinese friends to come see the show," said an enthusiastic Li-Anne.
"It's not just a show for the entertainment. There is also a cultural and educational side," said Benoît Desjardins, an entrepreneur who also said he was impressed by the Spectacular.
Since 2004, the Divine Performing Arts, the company that presents the Spectacular shows, has been reclaiming China's ancient culture and traditions by staging the Spectacular in some of the world's most prestigious venues.
Wednesday's performance was one of 20 shows in Canada. After the last show in Montreal tonight, it will play five shows in Toronto before continuing its global tour, which includes an 11-day run at New York's famed Radio City Music Hall.
Upon returning to Canada in the spring, the Spectacular will play in Calgary, Edmonton and Vancouver. By the end of its tour, the show will have played to a total live audience of 650,000 in over 60 cities.
The Epoch Times is a proud sponsor of the Divine Performing Arts shows that will perform in over 60 cities worldwide in 2008. To find a show near you, please visit www.bestchineseshows.com.
