First launched in 2004 with shows in only five cities, the Chinese New Year Spectacular has grown leaps and bounds. The 2008 tour will bring the Spectacular to more than 60 cities worldwide. From dances of the Qing Dynasty to the times of the famous General Yue Fei, even including modern tales told through classical Chinese dance, the performances of the 2008 Chinese New Year Spectacular have provided audience members in San Diego with a window into a different land. Held at the California Center for the Arts in Escondido, the Spectacular has given San Diego residents a new tradition for the New Year.
"The tenors, the sopranos … They were wonderful. I thought that ballet was very disciplined, but this is beyond that … The discipline of it was amazing. They were able to hold poses for so long," said audience member Carol Jackofsky. "It was magnificent, ecstatically gorgeous, and one of the best things I've ever seen. My sister lives in New York and I'm going to tell her to go to Radio City to see it."
Jackofsky, a hospital director and psychiatric social worker in San Diego, came to see the 8 p.m. show on January 16 with her husband, Dr. Gil Jackofsky. Carol said that she and her husband decided to attend the Chinese New Year Spectacular after reading media articles about the controversy created around the show by the Chinese consulates.
"It's sort of a path to enlightenment," said Dr. Jackofsky. "It was thought provoking and it made you think. The message was very clear and very uplifting, and I think that the theme of the show was peace and freedom."
"And that without awareness, there is no peace and freedom," chimed in Carol Jackofsky.
