BOSTON−Though it's been two years since their wedding, this affectionate couple is still as deeply in love as they were on their honeymoon. They came to Boston from Maine to watch the Chinese New Year Spectacular at the Boston Opera House on January 11. While they were transported with joy and delight to see such a wonderful theatrical production, their thoughts became enmeshed.
Five years ago Ms. Liu Guiyun moved to New York from China to work in a restaurant. There she met her husband, an American with a penchant for Chinese food. After marriage she moved to Maine where her husband, Jens Bergen, works as a prosecuting attorney.
Liu looked at her husband, brimming with happiness; "He is a very nice and considerate guy. I've just got my green card and then visited China, the first time I returned to my homeland for these years. He learned news about the Spectacular from the Internet and brought me here to watch the show."
"I was very moved," she said, with tears in her eyes.
Was she moved only by her husband's true love? Not exactly: "I was deeply touched by the show," she confided, "I could not help crying during the erhu performance. I do not know why. The erhu music really moves me although I don't understand music at all."
She seldom watches shows in America. But now she has a great longing for such a show again, saying "I would love to know about any of these shows every time they come around."
No one understands the wife better than her husband. Jens promised to bring his wife to watch the Chinese New Year Splendor at New York City's Radio City Music Hall at the end of this month, performed by the Divine Performing Arts Company, a cast of over 150 performers and its exclusive live orchestra.
Jens praised the dancing and music again and again. He also said what stirred him and touched his heart the most was the graceful erhu
