Wednesday afternoon at Montreal's Place des Arts, audience members were dished up an impressive helping of Chinese culture at a matinee of the Chinese New Year Spectacular, a world class production that's playing 20 shows in Canada as part of an ambitious global tour.

Audience members were impressed with the show's large-scale dance routines, combination of Chinese and western orchestral music and colourful state-of-the art digital backdrops.

Élyse Bouchard, team leader at Joliette's General Hospital, found the costumes "simply enchanting." "I liked everything," she said.

Bouchard added that throughout the show she had the feeling of being somewhere else, as though in another world. She said she appreciated the variety of artists, in particular the alto and soprano singers.

Her husband, Raymond Tessier, foreman for Canadian National, was moved by the artists' light, graceful gestures. "The gestures of the artists conveyed beautiful emotions."

Gloria Pietracoupa, who teaches English as a second language, said she particularrly enjoyed reading the lyrics in three languages projected on the big screen during the show.

The New York-based Divine Performing Arts Company, which presents the Spectacular, will stage its last show in Montreal on Jan. 17 before moving on to Toronto where it will play on Jan, 17, 18 and 19.

The Spectacular will return to Canada in the spring when it will play in Vancouver, Calgary and Edmonton.
