On its second day at Montreal's Place des Arts, the Chinese New Year Spectacular continues to impress audiences of all ages with its unique portrayal of Chinese culture and values.

"The details were meticulously attended to, the whole ensemble was harmonious," said Marie Charbonneau, a retired psychologist who attended the matinee on Wednesday afternoon with her husband, Raymond.

The couple, who brought along their adopted Chinese daughter, said they always celebrate the Chinese New Year, and most especially this year, the Year of the Rat, because it's the year their daughter was born.

"Everthing was of the highest caliber. The performers are perfectionists, as our little daughter is. The aesthetic aspect made an impression on me," said Mr. Charbonneau.

While the Charbonneaus traveled to China and seen shows there, they said nothing compares to the Spectacular. Mrs. Charbonneau said was glad to see that certain scenes of the Spectacular included some human rights issues in China.

"The show is beautiful, refined, delicate, elegant," said Micheline, a retired woman who previously worked in the insurance business.

"We can almost say they [the dancers] were not walking on the stage, it was as though they were on a flying magic carpet," added her friend Marie, a retired teacher.

The two friends said they were "blown away" by the first number in the Spectacular, in which angels and other celestial beings descended from the heavens. It was the first time they had seen a show that

Angie, a woman in her sixties, said she found the Spectacular "beautiful, elegant, gracious and colorful," adding, that she had "seen Chinese shows in the past, however, they were not professional."

The New York-based Divine Performing Arts Company, which presents the Spectacular, will stage its last show in Montreal on Jan. 17 before moving on to Toronto where it will play on Jan, 17, 18 and 19.

The Spectacular will return to Canada in the spring when it will play in Vancouver, Calgary and Edmonton.
