"It's wonderful! … I'm happy I'm still alive so I could see this show," said Lucie Bolsius, at the venerable age of 81.

This year, Mrs. Bolsius received a present that seemed to her like a gift from the heavens: tickets to the Chinese New Year Spectacular at the Place des Arts in Montreal on Wednesday. Mrs. Bolsius was overjoyed to be able to attend the show.

Already being familiar with the art of dance, and as someone who runs the group Friends of Bel Canto, Mrs. Bolsius said the Spectacular could be "appreciated even more by someone who understands dance and song."

Two other women, Pierrette Aubut and Pierrette Labelle, talked about the impressive digital backdrop and their fascination with this new technology.

"The scenery … it's new, it's fascinating. To see people come forward from the background and arrive on stage!" They also mentioned how much they liked the costumes and the richness of the colours worn by the performers.

The New York-based Divine Performing Arts Company, which presents the Spectacular, will stage its last show in Montreal on Jan. 17 before moving on to Toronto where it will play on Jan, 17, 18 and 19.

Divine Performing Arts will return to Canada in the spring when it will play in Vancouver, Calgary and Edmonton.

The Spectacular brings to the stage ancient Chinese history by portraying culture and values that are basic to China's 5,000-year civilization. An emphasis on China's ancient spiritual foundation sets this production apart from other modern works of the genre.
