The Philippines Ambassador to Canada, Jose Brillantes, enjoyed a "fascinating evening" at the Monday night show of the Divine Performing Arts Chinese New Year Spectacular in Ottawa.

He especially drew attention to "the charm of Chinese choreography and the power of the dance of the drums."

The dancers of Divining Performing Arts are professionally trained in both ballet and Chinese classical dance, and other audience viewers have similarly described the drumming as "intense," "stirring," and "powerful."

The performing company explains that the Spectacular attempts to showcase the "pure truthfulness, pure compassion, and pure beauty" of the divinely-inspired authentic traditional Chinese culture, with its emphasis on personal, moral, and spiritual development.

Themes of courage and faith from the ancient Buddhist and Daoist beliefs are vividly and artistically portrayed, as is the Falun Gong spiritual practice, and its principles of "truthfulness, compassion, and forbearance."

Referring to this authentic Chinese culture presented in the Spectacular , which performers say is without any elements of communist party culture, the ambassador said, "That's what I mean when I say the Chinese tradition of peace and harmony, and yet there was the powerful notion through the drums."

"This can happen only, for instance, here in Canada, because of the multicultural policy … They allow every heritage and every culture to exist. Not only do they promote and encourage this, they tell all the different cultures to propagate their own culture," he said.

"In other countries you have a 'melting pot' policy where all the cultures combine, and you come up with a new version or a new nationality, almost …

"What we saw tonight was one more proof that in Canada you have a kaleidoscope of different cultures combining, but not really combining because you can see them separately, differently, and individually."

"I am very, very happy to come here tonight," the ambassador said.
