Coming out of the Divine Performing Arts Chinese New Year Spectacular at the National Arts Centre in Ottawa, Member of Parliament Pierre Poilievre described it as a "spectacular show."
"The lights, sounds, and colour, the precision, and the coordination between the performers on stage, and the musicians behind the stage—it's really remarkable," he said.
He said he liked the "picture of traditional Chinese settings," referring to the dramatic digital backdrops, and was "amazed" at how the performers and organizers managed to "bring in so much beautiful imagery from the technical side as well."
Each performance on the program brought forward their own different qualities, and all of them had a strong message and were beautifully presented, he said.
Divine Performing Arts, the company that created and performed the show, explains that the Spectacular distinguishes itself as a cultural show insofar as it seeks to revive the artistic heritage of China past—a heritage untrammeled by communist influence.
Along with myths and legends from ancient China that tell about universal values such as courage, compassion, and loyalty, the show also has performances that tell the story of people of conscience who meet persecution in modern-day communist China.
Poilievre noted in particular that "it was good to see the Falun Gong presentation."
"We all have to remember that we have to stand up against communism and oppression, and that is something very clearly articulated by the artistic portrayals in this performance," Poilievre said.
"Clearly, in much of the music the message was clear. [It was] strongly in favour of freedom," he added.
Poilievre said the government of Canada has been a strong defender of freedom around the world, defending basic human rights in China and around the world, including the rights of Falun Gong practitioners.
"That's what our government is doing and we're very proud of that."
Pierre Poilievre is Member of Parliament of Nepean-Carleton, Ontario, and Parliamentary Secretary to the President of the Treasury Board.
